Dear Parents,
It has been a lovely week of classes and literacy awareness. I would like to thank you all for your support of our efforts. The school has exceeded our goal of 500 sponsors for the Read-A-Thon, with 4th grade gathering 96 sponsors so far. It is a great way to motivate students to read more, and that is the real goal. Reading is one of the most important and enriching activities your children can engage in, especially in terms of improving their overall English ability. Please help us make this project a success by reminding your children to fill out their reading log and signing it for them, particularly over the break. I am sure the people whom will benefit from the donations to the Tzu Chi charity will greatly appreciate it.
In addition to literacy activities, we covered a good amount in regular classes. In Math, we completed the last chapter in Unit 3: Multiplication of Whole Numbers. The children took their chapter 7 test on Thursday and we will go over it on Monday. We will begin our study of Unit 4: Division of Whole Numbers, which is comprised of four chapters, on Monday. In Science, we completed our study of Chapter 5: Parts of Ecosystems. The students will take the Chapter 5 test on Tuesday. In Social Studies, we reviewed Chapter 4, Lesson 1: Changes on the Farms and read about George Washington Carver. We will cover Lesson 2: The Coal Mines next week. Also next week, the students will be presenting their state projects. In Reading , we continued with Tanya’s Reunion and Literacy Week activities. There will be a short test over that story on Wednesday. During the next week, we will read a holiday story. In English, the children took the second part of their verb test. We will start working on writing a personal narrative next week. When we return from the break, we will begin a study of adjectives.
Next week, the Christmas Show will be on Thursday. Please remember that your children need to have a plain red T-shirt and black jeans or pants to wear for the show. They should bring these clothes in a bag on Monday, and I will keep them in our room. I would also like to have a Christmas party on Friday. I will supply beverages from the tea shop. The children are welcome to bring in extra snacks. We will play some games and watch a Christmas themed movie. I discussed the idea of a ‘secret Santa’ gift exchange with the children, and they all agreed that they would like to participate. They will draw a classmate’s name at random and get a gift for him or her for Friday. I think between 300 NT to 400 NT is a reasonable amount to spend. Please remember that it is a half-day and the children will be leaving after lunch.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Best regards,
Mr. Ahlers
